Welcome to the video where we uncover the surprising origins of your bottled water. Let's dive into where those bottles actually get filled.
Bottled water companies source their water from a variety of places, including municipal water systems, natural springs, and wells. It's not always as pure as the marketing might suggest.
Many popular brands, like Aquafina and Dasani, actually start their journey as municipal water. That's right, tap water!
Around 64% of bottled water is simply purified tap water.
But not all bottled water comes from the tap. About 55% is sourced from natural springs, bubbling up from underground aquifers.
Artesian water comes from confined aquifers under natural pressure. It's often considered higher quality due to its natural filtration.
Mineral water, with over 250 parts per million of dissolved solids, adds another layer of complexity. These minerals come from the rocks and soil the water passes through.
Now let's look at the bigger picture: the bottled water industry itself.
In 2020, the US bottled water market reached 15 billion gallons, with an average consumption of 21 gallons per person per year!
The industry is booming, with sales exceeding $40 billion in 2021. This massive growth comes with environmental concerns.
The environmental impact is significant, with millions of plastic bottles ending up in landfills each year. It's a problem we need to address.
Remember to recycle and consider reusable water bottles to reduce your environmental footprint.
